Testing & Assessment
Several standardized tests are either required or available to students at Eden Prairie High School. Click on the grade levels below to view a summary of these tests organized by grade.
Freshmen
AP TESTS
- Students who wish to earn college credit may take AP tests.
You don’t need to take a course to take the exam in the subject.
- Successful scores give students the opportunity to receive advanced placement and/or credit in college.
- AP Examinations are offered in 33 courses covering 19 subject areas.
- Examinations are offered on national test days in May. Preregistration is required in October; see Steve Rollin in the South Student Center for more information.
CREDIT FOR LEARNING
- Eden Prairie High School has a Credit for Prior Learning policy which provides students the opportunity to demonstrate prior learning.
A student may test out of a course if he or she is able to demonstrate prior knowledge and mastery of the course outcomes.
- Each department determines the appropriate assessments and acceptable level of performance.
- A student may not test out of any course in which they are currently enrolled.
- Testing will occur twice per year. All applications for this testing must be completed by November 1 for terms 3 & 4 and April 1 for terms 1 & 2 of the next school year.
- Forms for the Credit for Prior Learning process are available through the Gifted Services Coordinator.
Sophomores
MCA READING TEST
- The MCA reading test measures the degree to which students are proficient in reading.
- The test is offered in the Spring.
MCA SCIENCE TEST
- Measures the degree to which students are proficient on state-aligned science standards
- Students are assessed after completing their initial Biology course (usually taken by sophomores) at EPHS
- Provides the school with information on how the science curriculum is aligned with state standards
- The test is offered in the winter (1st semester students) and spring (2nd semester students)
PSAT
- Recommended for college-bound juniors. Sophomores may also take the PSAT.
- The PSAT measures verbal, math, and writing skills. It provides practice for SAT Reasoning Test and entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program.
- Considered a pre SAT; students may opt out of taking the PLAN and take this test instead.
- Preregistration is required in September, information will be in the Daily Bulletin.
- Offered in October.
- Cost is $25.

- Students planning to attend college after graduation should take the ACT and/or SAT tests.
- The ACT is the most popular test for our students
- The ACT is administered on five national test dates (February, April and June are the recommended test dates for Juniors.)
- It measures skills in five major curriculum areas: English, mathematics, reading, writing, and science reasoning. Information is available at www.act.org.
- The ACT offers an optional Writing test; some colleges require it.
- Cost for ACT (no writing) is $35; ACT Plus writing is $50.50.
- Many students take the test more than once to improve their score.
SAT
- Students planning to attend college after graduation should take the SAT and/or ACT tests.
- It is recommended that the college bound juniors take the ACT and/or SAT in the spring of their junior year and that seniors who have not tested or need to retake these test(s) do so in the fall of their senior year.
- The SAT test is primarily a multiple choice and measures critical reading, math, and writing abilities.
- The SAT Subject Tests measure your knowledge of particular subjects and your ability to apply that knowledge, and should be taken as soon after completing the appropriate coursework as possible.
- Information on the SAT tests is available at www.collegeboard.com.
- Cost for the SAT is $45.
- Many students take the test more than once to improve their score.
